Lingual Braces

Lingual Braces in Houston, TX

There are multiple orthodontic treatments available today for people who want to straighten their teeth. One of these options is lingual braces, which are virtually invisible, allowing you to achieve a beautiful smile without anyone ever having to know. Ask your trusted team at Greater Houston Dental Arts if lingual braces are right for you.

Lingual Braces Overview

Lingual braces are similar to traditional metal braces. However, the brackets, wires, and elastics are mounted on the back of the teeth rather than the front, so they can’t be seen. That is why they are more common among adults who want to achieve straighter teeth without interfering with their appearance.

How Do Lingual Braces Work?

Just like traditional braces, lingual braces work by applying gentle, continuous pressure on the teeth to help them gradually shift into alignment. The treatment length varies between 18-36 months, depending on the severity of the condition.

What Is the Procedure?

Lingual braces are personalized for your teeth and your treatment plan. While the fronts of teeth are typically consistent, the backside of each tooth has a distinctive shape, meaning each bracket must be custom-fitted for each patient. The procedure involves taking 3D images of the teeth, which are then used to create customized brackets. Dr. Younus will then cement the braces onto the back surfaces of your teeth.

Are Lingual Braces Right for You?

While lingual braces offer many benefits, they may not be right for everyone. First of all, the teeth need to be long enough to provide ample room to glue the brackets on the inside of the teeth, meaning they may not work for children or those with short teeth. Additionally, they are not well-suited for those with excessive bite problems. Keep in mind that the lingual braces are on the same side of the tongue, which may cause discomfort and may interfere with speech and with swallowing, especially in the short term.
