Few people are fortunate enough to be born with perfect teeth, but orthodontic treatment can create beautiful smiles for you or your child. We, at Greater Houston Dental Arts, are proud to offer different types of braces, which all work by applying continuous pressure over time to gradually move your teeth to the desired position. Dr. Younus will work with you to determine the type of braces that are right for you.
Traditional braces, also known as metal braces, come with metal brackets that are applied to the teeth, and wires that are threaded through these brackets to apply pressure on the teeth, gradually shifting them to the correct position. The wires are connected to the brackets using tiny rubber bands, which come in different colors that kids love to choose from. Traditional braces are the most affordable type of braces. However, they are the most noticeable ones.
Ceramic braces are similar to the traditional ones, also utilizing brackets and wires to shift teeth. The main difference is that the brackets are made from tooth-colored or transparent ceramic material. Ceramic braces are less visible to others, making them a popular choice for adults. However, the brackets can easily stain if not properly cleaned.
Lingual braces are essentially the same as traditional metal braces. The main difference is that the brackets and wires are placed on the inside of the teeth, making them virtually invisible. Lingual braces may be challenging to clean and may not be appropriate for severe orthodontic conditions that need extensive treatment. They may also be more uncomfortable at first. Moreover, regular adjustments may be more difficult and may take longer than with traditional braces.
Traditional braces are not for everyone. While orthodontic treatment is essential for promoting proper alignment of the teeth and jaws, the mechanisms used to shift and move the teeth can be uncomfortable. If you would like an alternative to standard metal or ceramic braces, Greater Houston Dental Arts can help.
We offer top-notch Invisalign® placement in Houston that is customized to suit your personal needs and interests. This form of orthodontic care utilizes modern materials like thin plastic to alter your natural bite, straighten your teeth, and promote favorable oral health.
Invisalign is a trademarked style of braces that uses clear plastic aligners to shift and move your teeth. The aligners are custom-made to fit your unique bite. You can place them over your teeth, and they apply consistent, gentle pressure to realign your smile.
These aligners are generated from a mold of your teeth. We work directly with the manufacturer to ensure you receive a proper fit. During treatment, it is common to need 20 or 30 aligners, which will be worn between 6 and 18 months. The duration of your treatment will vary depending on how moderate or severe your orthodontic needs are.
There are numerous reasons why patients consider Invisalign over traditional braces. One of the most significant is comfort. Metal and wire braces are well-known for causing discomfort because the hard materials irritate the soft tissues of the mouth.
When you opt for Invisalign, you do not need to deal with these issues. Instead, the aligners fit directly over your teeth and have a smooth surface for better comfort. Plus, there are no tightening appointments.
The other reason why you might choose Invisalign from our office near you in Houston is aesthetics. Because the aligners are clear, other people will not be able to notice you wearing them unless they look directly at your teeth. This means you don’t have to spend years with obvious brackets and wires marring your appearance.
If these benefits sound great to you, contact us at Greater Houston Dental Arts today for a consultation.
Your smile is your best accessory
Dr. Younus believes that notion so firmly that she spent 8 years in training, after dental school, to be able to treat her patients in the best possible ways. She grew up amongst a family of dentists, which strengthened her passion for the field. Dr. Younus is a dual specialist in Periodontics and Orthodontics, an achievement by only a handful of dentists.
After completing her general dentistry residency at the University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston, she pursued a Masters in Periodontics at Saint Louis University and a Masters in Orthodontics at the prestigious Columbia University in New York.
She spent a great deal of her time treating complex cases that required a multi-disciplinary approach, along with leading some ground-breaking, multi-specialty research with internationally renowned periodontic, orthodontic, prosthodontic and endodontic professors at all institutions. At the end of her training, Dr. Younus, along with her husband, moved back to Houston to be able to raise their, now, three-year-old son surrounded by the southern hospitality of Houstonians. Her husband is a physician-scientist and, as a family, they are always yearning to explore, learn and apply the newest innovations in their respective professions. When not in the office, you would find Dr. Younus surrounded by colleagues and friends, either learning the latest advances in dentistry or coordinating treatment for her patients. She also enjoys her time teaching residents part-time at the University of Texas School of Dentistry.
Dr. Younus has gone one step further to validate her knowledge and proficiency of Periodontics and Implantology. She is a diplomate of the American Board of Periodontics, an accolade only achieved by a small number of periodontists, and is board eligible for the American Board of Orthodontics. She is also actively involved in a number of professional and charity organizations. She is a soccer fan and foodie (by marriage) and, on weekends, is found cheering on her little boy who plays a multitude of sports in the neighborhood and all around town! If not that, you will definitely bump into her bicycling around the neighborhood, or chasing a toddler at a park or the library!
