What Are the Causes of Gum Recession?

As the chronic condition continues to progress, your gums may begin to recede, exposing the roots of your teeth. Your teeth may also become loose and may eventually fall out.
Factors that increase your risk of gum recession include inadequate oral care, tobacco use, certain illnesses, your genetic makeup, hormone changes, misaligned teeth, grinding, harsh brushing or flossing, trauma to the teeth, and prior orthodontic treatment.
What Is Gum Grafting?
While gum disease is not reversible, we can correct the damage done using gum grafting. This procedure is designed to cover exposed tooth root surfaces. It is a quick and relatively simple surgery in which a periodontist, a gum care specialist, uses healthy tissue to build the gum back up where it has receded.
Types of Gum Tissue Grafts
Connective-tissue graft: This is the most common type of graft and involves removing tissue from under the surface of the roof of the mouth and attaching it to the gum tissue surrounding the exposed root.
Free gingival graft: This procedure is typically required if you have thin gums. Tissue from the surface of the roof of your mouth is removed and attached to the target area.
Pedicle graft: This involves moving tissue from an area next to the tooth with the recession. This procedure only works when there is plenty of gum tissue in the area.
